You probably are familiar with the well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are no better since they are extremely inquisitive and are often in the habit of going places and getting into stuff that they shouldn't. About the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she managed to find a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and made up her mind to play in it for awhile. When she came back to the house the burrs had worked their way firmly into areas on her face, her ears and her little behind.

It was after hours so the Vet was closed and a visit to the animal hospital would certainly have been too expensive. So she was subjected to my tearful yet laughing efforts as I was able to one by one wiggle those burrs out of her hair as she resisted and yelped for upwards of two hours. They were matted so badly and right next to the skin that cutting them out was not an alternative.

A tranquilizer would have been ideal but I didn't have anything for her. Since there was no blood or life-threatening injury, making a trip to the emergency hospital was not required ... that time.

That is a sad yet amusing story to share and hopefully an experience she has long forgotten over time. It was also a little thing although painful and exasperating for both of us. But it might have been worse.

As a responsible pet owner you will need to know at least basic first aid for dogs so that you can be prepared for more life-threatening emergencies. You can often save on Vet fees for less serious problems like the one I had. But you may possibly find yourself in a situation where you need to help ease your canine's pain or carry out life-saving actions until you can arrive at the Vet.

Having a dog first aid kit is undeniably a good thing but you also have to know the proper actions to take in an actual emergency. Be sure you have phone numbers handy for both your regular Vet as well as the local emergency animal clinic. And be sure to learn basic canine first aid yourself.
