In the case of the younger man, there was no AED available at the hockey ground he was playing at. Despite the vigorous efforts of both bystanders and the emergency services, this man tragically expired. Who knows whether he might have been saved had an automated external device been available and somebody present had attended CPR classes and knew how to use it?

One death is one death too many and this incident, as well as several like it, should be sufficient proof that each sports ground should be equipped with an automated external defibrillator. The public must have access to these life saving devices in all public locations where large numbers of people are sometimes present or those at risk of a cardiac arrest. Some people may say that if you are fit enough to play hockey you are not at significant risk but the statistics prove differently. There are frequently no symptoms of heart disease and anyone could be the next sufferer.
